an update on mom

Well, in less than a week now I will be flying (God help me...) to be with mom and dad.  This has been one of the longest weeks of my life, and theirs as well.  I will soon be able to see them and be with them and do for them.  These last days have been so hard for me, waiting, wondering and not knowing things until I get a call, any call.
Mom is in skilled care now, she has had 2 days of PT and they are very slow going, she is still in much pain.  Her RA is adding to this pain and we found she is not getting her RA meds, so looking into a few things... she is being seen by different Dr.'s and just need to get them all on one page.  As with any hospital there are good care givers and some not so good.  Staff is short handed and things happen, but this is our mom...so we will be very pro-active in her care.  I hope each new days gives her a stronger feeling and she will be able to push past the pain to do the re-hab needed.
Dad will have his back surgery on Monday, and I pray his recovery will be smooth and speedy.  He will have a disc removed and they seem to think his pain in his hip will be stopped from this, praying this is so.  He is tired and sore but determined to see mom each day, so he is pushing himself.  I have two very head strong parents, lol.
I have lots to do this week  to prepare, but I am still having lots of stress and worry...gosh I wish I was moving thru this quicker...but I am thinking clearer and trying my best to stay positive.
Now off to work out, as this is a HUGE stress relief for me.

  1. You will have a busy week getting ready to head home to be with your family. Once you are there the anxiety you are experiencing with being far away will ease...it won't go completely because much is still to be done and discussed but being there will be helpful for the whole family.

This is the sad state of affairs in care these days...hospitals, nursing homes, rehab facilities, retirement residences...short staffed and under budget. But it has been my experience that all of these professionals are amazing people and when we work with them, amazing results abound. More and more is left to the family to do but when it's someone we love, we want to be there and doing, don't we?

I'm sending all kinds of love and support to your mother as she goes through her rehab, to your father as he gets ready for this surgery and hoping that this will alleviate his pain. To you and your sister because children of aging parents is a tough place to be..but you wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

It's tough when one parent is going through a trial; it's compounded when the other parent is as well...remember to take good care of you so that you are better able to do what needs to be done for your parents...and breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe!!! ♥

  2. I think you are doing well with your wait, I know it is not easy for you but you have come a long way. Just remember it would not be easy for anyone, so it is a natural feeling. Just the mention of "Two head strong parents" shows me that they will do well with maybe a few bumps in the road but things will work out for them. There always seems to be problems with these types of hospitals but you and your sister are the Angels watching over that and making sure your parents get the right treatment and care. One nice thing to think about is what they have can be fixed and they will mend, it is just going to take some time because of their ages. Remember to take care of yourself along this journey because that is very important too. Thinking of all of you and keeping you all close!! xoxoxoxo

  4. Kathy, thank you for your post on my blog HelenesDreams. I truly appreciate it. I too am experiencing great dilemna's with doctors and the way the medical system is running today. I don't know where to begin.

Since I last posted..my mom has once again had another stroke and is back in the hospital. I am not sure what will happen next. I felt she was doing very well..but I don't know now really.

I will pray for you and your family and I hope that each day you will find some peace in this, as it is just very very hard for me.

    I know your pain.
